  1. Announcing the release of SlipStream Jet 1.000. This Windows program
  2. will let you download your selected USENET newsgroups from your Internet 
  3. provider (SLIP/PPP) and convert them to QWK format for use with your 
  4. favorite offline reader. It will read your reply packets and upload 
  5. them to your NNTP server. It will create 100% correct USENET headers. 
  6. This program requires Windows 3.1 or higher, a TCP/IP connection, and 
  7. a Winsock 1.1 compliant stack installed.

  9. Please be sure to read the license.txt for important legal, license and
  10. warranty information. The current unregistered version will allow up to 
  11. 5 newsgroups to be selected.
  12.  
  13. SlipStream requires VBRUN300.DLL and may not run in Windows 
  14. Standard mode. VBRUN300.DLL can be found at most FTP sites 
  15. and most BBS'. Please make sure your VBRUN300.DLL is dated 5-12 or
  16. later, and not 4-28-93.

  19. INSTALLATION
  20.  
  21. 1. Unzip the file you downloaded into a temporary directory (ie:
  22.    c:\unzip). SETUP.EXE will NOT run if run from the same 
  23.    directory as specified in the TEMP environment variable.
  24.    ***Also*** see WINSTALL.HLP - MOST apply to Slipstream.

  26. 2. Select the "Run" command from Windows File Manager, type in
  27.    [dir]\install.exe and click on "OK".
  28.  
  29. 3. Answer installation questions according to your preferences.

  31. 4. Delete unzipped files from your temporary directory.

  34. SETUP
  35.  
  36. 1. Start Slipstream from the Slipstream Program Group the 
  37.    installation created.
  38.  
  39. 2. Click on the button showing a Wrench icon.
  40.  
  41. 3. Enter your NNTP server hostname (or IP address), your email address
  42.    and organization.
  43.  
  44. 4. Click on path and enter the names of your mail packet directory
  45.    (where your QWK reader looks for QWK packets), your reply directory
  46.    (where you upload from) and the directory and filename of your QWK
  47.    reader.

  49. 5. Click on the button showing the File Cabinet icon.
  50.  
  51. 6. Using the Add button enter the names of the newsgroups you wish to
  52.    subscribe to. Slipstream defaults to updating the high message number
  53.    for each new group. If you know the number of the last message you
  54.    marked as read, you can uncheck "Reset High" and enter a new number
  55.    under "High Pointer".

  57. 7. Click on "OK" when you are done entering newsgroups (remember the 
  58.    unregistered version only allows 10).

  60. 8. Edit the pack.pif and unpack.pif, which are found in the
  61.    slipstrm\data directory, to show the correct location of pkzip and
  62.    pkunzip on your system.

  64. 9. Your setup is now complete.

  67. RUNNING SLIPSTREAM JET
  68.  
  69. 1. Establish your TCP/IP connection to your Internet provider.
  70.  
  71. 2. Double click the program icon in the SlipStream program group.
  72.  
  73. 3. Click on the button showing a Robot icon. You will be presented with a
  74.    dialog box. Check whether to just download articles or also
  75.    post Replies (SlipStream will automatically sense a reply packet and
  76.    mark "Post Messages" as checked). Email is not available as of this
  77.    version, but will be very soon. When you are finished making your
  78.    selections, click on "OK". Slipstream will take it from here.

  80. 4. When the MSDOS icon (or window) is gone the QWK packet has been
  81.    created and is ready to be read. You can either click on the button
  82.    with the Photo and Envelope icon to start your QWK reader or quit
  83.    SlipStream (by clicking on the button with the Arrow icon) and start
  84.    your QWK reader by your normal method.

  86. NOTES: Some Windows QWK readers make changes to the header info when
  87. you edit an existing reply message. This will cause a "Bad Article
  88. Number" on your NNTP server and the message will *not* be successfully
  89. uploaded. If you must edit a message you've already created, the best
  90. work around for this is to copy the text of the message to the
  91. clipboard and then paste it into a new message. You will have to
  92. manually enter the subject and newsgroup. The 2 pass threading is also
  93. not fully implemented as of this release. This will allow you to
  94. download subject headers and select which specific articles to download.

  107. Remember, this is shareware. It is NOT free. PLEASE register if you
  108. continue use. Besides, you'll be the envy of your "Net" block as they
  109. say, "Gee, this person actually registers stuff!" ; )  You will also be
  110. able to sleep at night knowing that you are not stealing the food out of
  111. our kids mouths, and you will be provied with full program technical
  112. support.
